Believe it or not, not all sheep are used to produce high quality wool, some are Dual Purpose Merinos which means they are used to produce both wool and meat. Some non Dual Purpose Merinos breeds of sheep are used specifically for meat and others just for milk, but in our case, all of our Merino sheep are Dual Purpose Merinos. Other common Dual Purpose Merinos that are bred in Australia include Border Leicester, Corriedale, Coopworth and Texel
Non Dual Purpose Merinos that are used for the production of meat only include sheep breeds such as Suffolk, White Suffolk and Dorper. Another non Dual Purpose Merinos sheep breed that is used only for the production of milk is the East Friesland. The non Dual Purpose Merinos East Friesland breed is renowned for its fertility and has a high probability of producing twins and triplets and the breed has a high amount of milk production to enable it to raise multiple lambs.
Not all sheep breeds are suitable as Dual Purpose Merinos with different breeds of sheep used for differing purposes such as wool, meat or milk production. In Australia, 70% of the sheep we farm are Dual Purpose Merinos and Merino breeds. Our Dual Purpose Merinos have been crossbred to take on the qualities of both their parents but to a smaller scale than either original parent. When it comes to producing the finest Dual Purpose Merinos, experience counts, and we've been doing this since 1963.
Sheep producers like Weatray Merinos, will sometimes mate a ram ram from one breed with a ewe from another breed to produce a lamb that is crossbred and more suitable as a Dual Purpose Merinos product. Our Merinos are Dual Purpose Merinos that have been proven amongst the prime production community in Australia. Our Dual Purpose Merinos are suitable for both meat and woll production and have a reputation of being the highest quality. Read more at Poll Merino Rams
